In Week 9 of Term 4, 70 students from the Bremer Rugby League Academy participated in the annual Matt Gillett Cup, a 3-day rugby league carnival based in Brisbane.
In gruelling conditions, the Open Boys, Open Girls, and Junior Boys showed enormous PRIDE and character across the three days, engaging in some quality rugby league matches against quality teams. The entire Bremer community should be enormously proud of all students who played in this event and represented our school in the best way possible.
On the field, our Open Boys team made the Division 1 finals, going down to eventual winners Padua in their semi-final. This was a great achievement from our team with many new boys representing Bremer for the first time. Watching this team grow and develop together across 2024 will be very exciting.
The Junior Boys team also had great success, making it all the way to the Division 1 Grand Final v Bray Park. In a tough game, the Bremer boys never gave up and fought hard all the way. Playing in three straight days of league in a carnival such as this will be a great learning experience for our younger team and will definitely put them in a better place for 2024.
Finally, our Open Girls team could not have less luck for their campaign. Losing 4 girls in their first match to concussion, and then a host of injuries throughout the event, they ended up with only 7 fit players out of 21 for their final match. In an enormous show of Bremer Pride, both boys teams cheered and chanted their hearts out for the girls in their final match, some of the loudest support I have ever heard. Although the girls had every excuse to give up, they didn’t and showed why they have the making of a great team.
Overall, our kids were brilliant on and off the field and are laying the foundations for a very strong Bremer Rugby League Academy. Couldn’t be prouder of all of them!
