We interviewed two of our Bremer Basketball Academy student-athletes about their experience so far this year, following their CISSSA success and upcoming tournaments. Here's what Sam and Jaxon had to say:
Why did you join the Bremer Basketball Academy?
Sam: I've been playing basketball at Bremer for the past 3 years. When I learned about the establishment of the Bremer Basketball Academy, I was genuinely excited. Being part of something significant from its inception, which continues to rapidly expand and evolve, has been an incredible experience. I joined the Academy to contribute to its history and pave the way for future students.
Jaxon: I've been on the Bremer Basketball team for several years. When I heard about the Academy, I seized the opportunity to enhance and refine my basketball skills while enjoying the company of my peers, teammates, and friends.
What have you found to be the most enjoyable part of the Academy?
Sam: It's difficult to pinpoint a single favourite aspect, but the overall support we receive stands out. Whether it's the funding, sponsorships, or quality equipment, along with the enthusiastic fans cheering us on at our home games. The entire Bremer community rallies behind the Basketball Academy, and rewarding to be able to give back to everyone who supports us, by winning games and making a name for the Academy and the school community.
Jaxon: The most enjoyable part of the Academy is the array of opportunities it provides. From our weekly training and development sessions with partners like Ipswich Basketball Association, to collaborations with the Brisbane Bullets, BOQ Winston Glades, and Hoppers Heaven. These unique opportunities are unparalleled, and the Academy's coaching staff also plays a big role in our growth, integrating basketball into our curriculum and arranging exhibition matches to elevate our skills.
How does it feel to be part of an undefeated CISSSA team, and to have won the recent CISSSA grand final match?
Sam: The sensation is nothing short of amazing. Our goal was not only to win the CISSSA competition, but to dominate it. With resounding victories of 30, 40, 50+ points, the magnitude of our program's uniqueness has become evident. Winning the finals in front of our enthusiastic home crowd added the perfect finishing touch to an exceptional season.
Jaxon: The grand final was intensely competitive, reminiscent to me of a State of Origin Game 3, where everyone relentlessly pursued the ball from start to finish. Being part of an undefeated CISSSA team is deeply satisfying, particularly considering the closely contested matches throughout the season. Our hard work, early morning trainings, sessions at Hoopers Heaven, and guidance from Ipswich Basketball Association coaches contributed to this accomplishment. The victory marks a milestone, but we're fully aware that our journey continues as we approach Metros, Regionals and beyond.
What challenges have you overcome personally, and are there any challenges that the team had to work to overcome together?
Sam: Each game presents unique challenges, with opposing teams employing diverse strategies. As a team, our most significant challenge was establishing and solidifying our roles, transitioning from individual play to cohesive teamwork. With the influx of new players from different schools, it took time to blend our styles and gel as a unit. We've made substantial progress, excelling in executing plays, enhancing communication on and off the court, and fostering cohesion during training sessions.
Jaxon: Personally, joining the Bremer Basketball Academy taught me to view obstacles as opportunities for growth, both on and off the court. Embracing optimism transformed challenges into valuable learning experiences. As a team, we focused on accountability, recognizing that victories and losses are collective outcomes. This mindset nurtured camaraderie, uniting us in our shared pursuit of success.
If someone was on the fence about joining the Bremer Basketball Academy, what would you say to them?
Sam: I would encourage them to attend one of our basketball experience days or have a conversation with any of our school representatives- students, staff, even spectators. The Academy welcomes individuals of all skill levels, whether you're a newcomer to basketball or a seasoned player. Opportunities abound, from in-curriculum basketball classes to participation in various teams and weekly training sessions facilitated by our partnership with Ipswich Basketball. The Bremer Basketball Academy offers a place for everyone, with even more to anticipate.
Jaxon: To those undecided about joining the Bremer Basketball Academy, I'd suggest they reach out and engage in conversations with Academy members, staff, teachers, peers, and even opponents! They have firsthand knowledge of the dedication, hard work, and results that define the Academy. While the journey demands effort, the rewards are substantial. This inaugural year marks the foundation upon which we will build and progress.
