The step between primary school and high school is a big one. You go from being in one class in one place with one teacher who comes to you to having to go to many classes in many places with ever so many teachers. And it really doesn’t help that sometimes you have to go from one end of the school to another within a very short span of time. SERIOUSLY, I think all enrolment forms should say, “to be eligible to enrol, one must hold a Park Run record.”
It was a big change, but not one that I wasn’t excited for. My family and I moved up to Queensland from the city of Newcastle, just north of Sydney in New South Wales. Because of this, I missed the first few weeks of school and all the prior orientation and information sessions. On my first day, it was only a brief walk around the school before straightaway having to go to my first class.
Going from a small school with 350 children to a school with 450 children in just year 7, seems like an incredibly daunting experience. The first week for me was filled with having to ask many times where the front gate was and which block I was in and how to get to the next class, but the teachers and students were extremely caring and eventually, I found my way around in no time. One of the things I really liked was that the Year 7 area was like a little sanctuary set off at a different end of the school to all the other year group areas. That way, we kind of had our own space filled with all the people, like me, who really didn’t know much about Bremer.
The library has by far been my favourite place. Even on my first few days, I loved to come in and crochet and read all my favourite books and enjoy a chat with Mrs Clarke, the librarian. All of the staff were really kind and helpful and coming to Bremer taught me two things.
One, never be afraid to ask questions; and two, everyone really does belong at Bremer.
