IDAHOBIT, which is observed on 17 May every year, marks the anniversary of the World Health Organisation's 1990 decision to remove homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. Since its inception in 2005, IDAHOBIT has been recognised by millions worldwide, celebrating progress and raising awareness about ongoing discrimination faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.
Last week, our students celebrated IDAHOBIT Day, highlighting the importance of queer visibility. At Bremer, our LGBTQIA+ support group offers a space where students and allies can find friendship, support, and advice from peers with shared experiences. We spoke with some of these students about their journeys:
Can you share your experience as an LGBTQIA+ student and how you've found support and acceptance within the school community?
J: "Overall, my experience as an LGBTQIA+ member has been positive. Once I opened up, I quickly realised there were other students like me, and I made friends easily."
A: "My journey of self-discovery began around three years ago. Questioning my sexuality and gender felt natural- I never felt particularly shocked to discover that I am Queer. This questioning led to a deeper understanding of who I am. Although I'm still learning, I've discovered where I fit into this world."
Could you highlight any memorable moments or events that celebrated diversity and LGBTQIA+ inclusion?
J: "The Rainbow Family group is a great starting point for new and senior students alike. We even have exciting excursions, like last year when we saw the Drag Queens!"
A: "As I learned more about myself, I initially felt distant from my peers and this lead me to a dark place. Thankfully, the Rainbow Family club allowed me to connect with students like me. These friendships have been crucial to my wellbeing."
What advice would you give to other LGBTQIA+ students struggling with acceptance or facing discrimination?
J: "Don't be scared or overwhelmed by others' opinions. Focus on feeling good about yourself and doing what's right for you."
A: "To those struggling with acceptance or facing cruelty, you're doing great. Life may be tough now, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Find your people—they make a difference. Our school has amazing staff in the wellbeing hub and the guidance office who can help too."
At Bremer, our Rainbow Family meets regularly to support students of all identities and backgrounds. If you're interested in joining, please see one of the guidance officers in the student office or Mx Muller in D-Block.
