At Bremer State High School, we are committed to ensuring every student learns and engages safely in the digital world. As part of the Queensland Department of Education, we support students, parents, and staff to understand their role in creating safe, respectful and positive online environments.

Supporting Online Safety in Schools

With increasing access to technology, it's more important than ever that our students learn how to navigate the digital space safely. The Department’s Online Safety in Queensland State Schools document outlines how schools, families and communities can work together to support online safety and wellbeing.

Student Cybersafety Resources

The Department has developed a suite of age-appropriate programs and resources to help students build healthy digital habits:

Information for Parents and Carers

As a parent or carer, there are many things you can do to help your child stay safe online:

  • Place devices in shared family spaces
  • Talk to your child about appropriate online behaviour and respectful communication
  • Keep track of online activity, including on mobile devices
  • Set clear rules about what websites, apps and platforms are allowed
  • Use parental control software to filter and monitor content
  • Discuss strategies for dealing with online issues, including how to seek help
  • Encourage open communication and let your child know they can come to you without fear of getting in trouble

For more tips and advice, download the Online Awareness for Parents and Caregivers guide.

eSafety Support

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner is Australia’s national online safety authority. Their website provides:

  • A dedicated Parents Page
  • Blog posts and current advice
  • Practical tips for dealing with cyberbullying, image-based abuse, and unwanted contact

You can also explore Digitalk, a resource from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, designed to empower young people and their carers to manage online risks and engage safely.

Social Media Safety

Social media is a big part of young people's lives. To support safe and respectful use:

  • Review age-appropriate apps and platforms
  • Help your child manage their privacy settings
  • Monitor their followers and friend lists
  • Remind them to keep passwords secure
  • Talk about the long-term impact of posts and photos
  • Consider following or friending them on social media to stay connected

For more on this topic, download the Social Media and the School Community guide.

Reporting Inappropriate Content

Most platforms allow users to block or report harmful behaviour. If your child sees or experiences something upsetting:

If your student requires additional support, they are encouraged to speak with their Year Level Team, who can assist with reporting inappropriate content, having content removed, and providing wellbeing support throughout the process.
