Bremer Rugby League Academy

​​​​Welcome to the Bremer Rugby League Academy, where we're committed to helping boys and girls in years 7-12 develop their rugby league skills on and off the field. Established in 2023, our academy provides a comprehensive pathway for student-athletes of all skill levels, from beginners to those with intermediate and advanced skills.

At the Rugby League Academy, we pride ourselves on instilling values such as commitment, consistency, and consideration in our students. Our experienced coaching staff is dedicated to providing unparalleled opportunities for young athletes to improve their on-field fundamentals through advanced skill development and strength and conditioning programs.

We understand that every student-athlete has unique strengths and weaknesses, and our program is designed to cater to individual needs. We offer a range of training options that are tailored to each athlete's skill level, allowing them to develop at their own pace while building the confidence they need to succeed both on and off the field.​

Playing Ru​​​gby League at Bremer:

In 2024, Bremer SHS is fielding six teams to compete in external competitions and represent the school. These teams are the following:

  • Year 7-8 Boys
  • Year 7-8 Girls
  • Year 9-10 Boys
  • Year 9-10 Girls
  • Open Boys
  • Open Girls

Led by Director of Sport, Michael Seiler, the Bremer Rugby League Academy is fortunate to be delivered by a number of great coaches with extensive rugby league experience. These include but are not limited to:

Coaching Profile: Yvonne O'Neill 

​Meet Yvonne O'Neill, hailing from a remarkable background as the first indigenous Australian international Rugby League player, Yvonne brings a wealth of experience and passion to her coaching role.

With a distinguished career in Rugby League, Yvonne O'Neill has not only showcased her exceptional skills on the field but has also paved the way for future generations. As one of the coaches of the Bremer Rugby League Academy, she channels her fervour for the sport into nurturing the talents of young women who share her love for Rugby League.

Yvonne's dedication goes beyond the game, as she is committed to supporting and empowering the aspiring athletes under her guidance. Her journey serves as an inspiration, embodying the values of determination, resilience, and a genuine passion for fostering excellence in rugby league.

Coaching Profile: Michael Seiler

Meet Michael Seiler, a dedicated coach with nearly 20 years of experience in coaching both league and union. 

With a passion for rugby league and a wealth of knowledge, Michael is committed to developing student-athletes to achieve their full potential. 

Coaching Experience:

Michael Seiler brings nearly two decades of coaching expertise to the Bremer Rugby League Academy. With a passion for both league and union formats, he has dedicated himself to nurturing young talent at every level, spanning from U6 to U18. His extensive coaching journey has allowed him to accumulate a wealth of knowledge and insights that greatly benefit his students.

Coaching Philosophy:

At the heart of Michael's coaching philosophy lies the belief that developing good people takes precedence over forging good athletes. He understands that the lessons learned on the field extend far beyond the realm of sports, shaping character, discipline, and resilience. By instilling strong values and fostering an environment of mutual respect, he empowers his athletes to excel not only in the game but also in life.

Future Focus for the Bremer Sports Academy:

Looking ahead, Michael Seiler envisions the Bremer Sports Academy as a platform for imparting essential skills and confidence to students, enabling them to embrace one of the world’s most captivating yet demanding sports. While victories are celebrated, Michael places equal emphasis on cultivating a vibrant culture, forging lasting memories, nurturing friendships, and fostering an atmosphere of enjoyment. He firmly believes that true triumph in sports lies in creating enduring memories, connections, and friendships that span far beyond the confines of the playing field. For Michael, these are the victories that truly endure.

Coaching Profile: Shane de Jager

Meet Shane de Jager, a versatile coach whose diverse background in sports has enriched his coaching perspective. 

As a coach, Shane invests his energy and expertise in the Bremer Rugby League Academy and his focus remains resolute – to nurture young talents, foster personal growth, and set the stage for a future defined by excellence, both on and off the field.

Playing Experience:

During his high school years, Shane actively participated in a diverse array of sports, including Cricket, Football, Swimming, and Cheerleading. His athletic journey extended to the District Track & Field stage, where he showcased his skills as a versatile athlete. Additionally, he proudly represented the West Brisbane Taipans in State and World Cup TRL Carnivals.

Coaching Experience:

With a dynamic playing background, Shane transitioned seamlessly into coaching roles that showcased his passion for the development of young athletes. He's held coached teams in CISSSA tournaments and the Matt Gillett Rugby League Cup. His extensive coaching experience reflects his commitment to nurturing the potential of budding talents.

Coaching Philosophy:

Shane's coaching philosophy is a testament to his unwavering belief in the power of sports to shape not only superior athletes but also exceptional human beings. He approaches coaching with a desire to instil​ values, discipline, and a sense of responsibility in the young minds he guides. His dedication to fostering both personal growth and athletic excellence shines through in every facet of his coaching approach.

Looking ahead, Shane envisions a future for the Bremer Sports Academy that's built upon a foundation of strength and sustainability. His primary focus is to establish a robust groundwork that will serve as a springboard for growth and success for years to come. Shane's aspiration extends beyond the immediate. His vision involves cultivating an environment where young athletes are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to navigate the challenges of both sports and life. By fostering a sense of belonging, ambition, and camaraderie, he strives to create a legacy that stands the test of time.

Coaching Profile: Andrew Pickwell

​Meet Andrew Pickwell, a seasoned coach with a passion for nurturing athletic talent and fostering a winning mindset.

Coaching Experience:

Andrew Pickwell brings a wealth of coaching experience to the table, spanning various sports and age groups. As a former Level 2 Swimming coach, he spent five successful years at the helm of the Karalee Swim Club, shaping young talents and fostering a culture of excellence in the pool. His tenure as the Met West Swimming Manager from 2009 to 2024 further solidifies his expertise in nurturing swimming talents at a regional level. 

On the rugby league front, Andrew's coaching journey is equally impressive. He served as the Met West 11yrs and 12yrs Rugby League Coach for a combined thirteen years, instilling discipline and teamwork in his young athletes. He has also coached at the representative level, with positions as the Queensland Invitational Rugby League 12yrs coach and the Queensland Maroons Rugby League 12yrs coach, where he contributed to shaping the future stars of the sport. Additionally, his role as a Queensland 12years Rugby League selector from 2021 to 2024 showcases his keen eye for talent and commitment to fostering the growth of the sport at all levels.

Playing Experience: 

Andrew's journey in sports doesn't stop at coaching; he boasts an impressive playing career as well. Starting as a competitive swimmer, Andrew excelled from club level to state titles, laying the foundation for his deep understanding of aquatic sports. Transitioning to rugby union and league during his school years, he continued to showcase his athletic prowess on the field. His time with Colts Rugby Union in the Brisbane competition further honed his skills and strategic acumen. Not one to shy away from challenges, Andrew also ventured into competitive bodybuilding for over two decades, retiring in 2017 after an international competition.

Coaching Philosophy:

At the heart of Andrew's coaching philosophy lies the belief that success is earned through dedicated effort and meticulous preparation. Whether measured by victories on the scoreboard or personal growth off the field, Andrew emphasises the importance of hard work and perseverance in achieving one's goals. However, amidst the rigors of training and competition, he never loses sight of the essence of sport: having fun. Andrew believes that enjoyment is paramount in any athletic pursuit, ensuring that his athletes find fulfillment and passion in their endeavours.​

Future Focus for the Bremer Sports Academy:

​Looking ahead, Andrew is dedicated to shaping the future of sports at the Bremer Sporting Academy. His vision revolves around empowering students to cultivate genuine pride in themselves and their school. By fostering an environment where individuals are encouraged to strive for excellence both as athletes and individuals, Andrew aims to unleash the full potential of each student. Through participation in the academy's programs, he envisions students embracing their unique talents, fostering camaraderie, and embodying the values of dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship.​

We also have strong partnerships with external organizations, including local rugby clubs and national sporting bodies, to provide additional opportunities for our athletes to learn from the best.
