Attendance

At Bremer State High School, we know that being at school every day counts. Missing even one day of learning each week quickly adds up — resulting in almost two months of lost education each year. Regular attendance is crucial for your child’s learning, wellbeing, and future success.

Why Every Day Counts

The Every Day Counts initiative, supported by Education Queensland, promotes the importance of regular school attendance through four key messages:

  • All children should be enrolled at school and attend every school day.

  • Schools should monitor, communicate, and implement strategies to improve attendance.

  • Truanting can place students in unsafe situations and affect their future opportunities.

  • Attendance is everyone’s responsibility — schools, families, and the community.

You can find out more about the Every Day Counts initiative on the Education Queensland website.

The Benefits of Regular Attendance

When students attend school every day, they:

  • Learn better

  • Build stronger friendships

  • Feel happier and more connected

  • Have a brighter future

  • Access more learning opportunities

  • Experience better long-term life outcomes

Remember: Missing just one day per week equates to missing approximately two months of school over the course of a year.

If your child is experiencing challenges with attendance, please reach out to their Year Level Team. We offer a range of support strategies to help keep students attending and engaged.

Attendance Procedures

To support every student’s learning and wellbeing, please ensure you follow these procedures for absences, late arrivals, and early departures:

1. Notifying the School of an Absence

If your child is absent, please notify the school:

  • Before the absence,

  • On the day of the absence, or

  • As soon as practicable after their return.

How to notify us:

2. Late Arrivals

If your child arrives after Form Class:

  • They must report directly to their Year Level Hub to sign in.

  • If the lateness is due to an approved reason (e.g., medical appointment), please provide a written note or email the Year Level Hub.

3. Early Departures

If your child needs to leave school early:

  • They must collect a Leave Pass from their Year Level Hub before school or during break times.

  • This helps minimise classroom interruptions and supports a smooth departure process.

To notify us of an early departure:

  • Send a written note with your child, or

  • Email the Year Level Hub with the details.

4. Emergency or Unplanned Early Departures

If an urgent situation arises:

  • Please allow up to 20 minutes for your child to be located and signed out.

  • Some classes may be held in workshops, on the oval, or in other areas where students are not immediately contactable.

  • We aim to minimise interruptions to learning and appreciate your understanding.
